Keppel Bay Sailing Club

A contemporary interpretation of a sailing club, one that is both robust and refined.

The proposed sailing club is conceived as a contemporary coastal pavilion that engages directly with its waterfront setting, balancing resilience, openness, and community activation. Positioned along the shoreline, the building adopts a linear form that maximises its frontage to the ocean, offering uninterrupted views while reinforcing a strong visual and physical connection to the water.

Elevated above the rocky embankment, the structure responds pragmatically to coastal conditions, mitigating flood risk and wave impact while creating a sheltered threshold beneath. This elevated datum also enhances the building’s presence, allowing it to read as a lightweight, floating form when viewed from the water.
The roofscape is a defining architectural gesture, composed of angular, folded planes that echo the geometry of sails and the dynamism of the maritime context. These broad overhangs provide deep shading to the glazed façades, reducing solar gain while enabling generous outdoor terraces that blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces.

Materially, the palette is restrained and contextually grounded, combining warm timber screening with lighter structural elements. The timber battens soften the building’s scale, introduce texture, and act as a permeable skin, filtering light, providing privacy, and reinforcing a coastal, crafted character.
Internally, the program is organised to prioritise social engagement and visibility. Upper-level hospitality spaces open onto expansive decks, capitalising on panoramic coastal views, while lower levels maintain a direct relationship to the water’s edge, supporting operational and recreational functions tied to sailing activities. The transparency of the façade ensures that activity within animates the waterfront, contributing to the public realm.

Overall, the design presents a contemporary interpretation of a sailing club, one that is both robust and refined, deeply responsive to its environmental context, and oriented toward fostering community interaction along the coastline.
