Brookes Street Early Education

Transforming a heritage-listed office space into a nurturing early education centre.

Brookes Street Early Education was conceived from the need to provide childcare facilities for the children of our employees. After four years of operation, the knowledge gained from the facility’s day-to-day requirements presented the ability to expand the service.

The design of Brookes Street Early Education was informed by the heritage building’s history as the original Fortitude Valley School (1867). Architecturally restored, the space is warm and welcoming, providing a nurturing, natural, and responsive learning environment. The building is surrounded by natural grounds, which provide children with space to explore, discover, investigate, and wonder.

BSPN worked with a local Indigenous artist to create artwork depicting the local area, as well as working with the children to create an outdoor mural as a cultural connection to the local area.

BSPN, uniquely as both client and architect, has approached this early childhood education facility from a very different perspective to that of the traditional provider. The collaboration of education designers and educators has provided an opportunity for insight into its use and operation.
