For over 150 years, Queen Victoria Market has been at the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, serving fresh produce to locals and offering tourists a taste of Victoria and Australia.
BSPN collaborated with the City of Melbourne to revitalise the Food Hall within the heritage precinct, creating a unique dining experience that celebrates both heritage and contemporary design.
Expressed steelwork and concrete details, respond to the existing forms of the market precinct. A large, glazed roof filters natural light, providing relief between the existing masonry market buildings. The transparent nature of the design promotes interest and permeability within an otherwise internalised market experience. High-level planters soften the space and define market offers whilst maintaining openness at pedestrian level.
The result is a welcoming, vibrant space where visitors can linger, enjoy the food, and experience an iconic destination within the city of Melbourne.
